Machu Picchu, Peru

Built in the 15th century as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti, the dry-stone buildings of Machu Picchu-"old peak"- are located nearly 8000 feet above sea level in what is now known as Peru's Cuzco Region. The citadel was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
