The town of Mostar in what is now known as Bosnia-Herzegovina came under Ottoman rule in the 16th century, becoming fortified and replacing the old wooden town bridge with one made of stone, the Stari Most (Old Bridge) from which the town gets its name.
The bridge stood for over 400 years before being destroyed in the 90s during conflict within the region. As of 2004, the bridge and much of the town have been rebuilt, and the new Old Bridge is recognised as a UNESCO Heritage Site.
